Autumn came around in the blink of an eye this year and, with it, awards season is upon us. Last week saw us glam up once again for the Learning Technologies Awards – where our work with the Institution of Civil Engineers on CityZen had been shortlisted for Best Learning Game.
The competition was tough, with nine other finalists. And as we sat waiting with fingers, toes, and everything you can think of crossed, we held our breath as Bronze and Silver were announced… before we heard we won Gold!
The judges commented that CityZen is “a beautifully integrated and coherent game that truly inspired its young target audience to become interested in civil engineering.”
Aimed at students aged 16-18, the game not only introduces them to the fascinating world of civil engineering but also cultivates vital skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, critical thinking, and communication.
We were delighted that the game was recognised with the award, a testament to ICE’s commitment to creating a new generation of young civil engineers, and to making the career more accessible to more students from more walks of life.
And we’ve been super proud to be involved with this project. Since its launch in 2021, almost 300 schools have taken part, with over 1700 students playing it. Students who played the game have gone on to study civil engineering. And the game has encouraged entries from all-girl teams into a STEM field that has traditionally been a male-dominated one.

We’re proud too that this marks our second Gold award in a new category, a sign that we’re never standing still when it comes to creating impactful learning experiences.
The ICE CityZen competition continues and schools can register their interest for the 2024 award now. We can’t wait to see what future participants have to offer.
We’re always happy to talk to you about how immersive technologies can engage your employees and customers. If you have a learning objective in mind, or simply want to know more about emerging technologies like VR, AR, or AI, send us a message and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
