Bringing engineering training to life with narrative scenarios
As part of our ongoing partnership with NATS, we collaborated on the transformation of their flagship engineering course from lengthy PowerPoint-led classroom sessions to a leaner, more effective blended programme.
An important aspect of the new course is a set of scenarios set in and around a fictional airport. Each scenario focuses on one of the topics from the course, for example, Navigation, Meteorology and Voice Communications.
The instructor shares the main scenario screen with the class, and learners use their own devices, for example a mobile phone, to connect to the session and answer questions. Success in answering questions and completing the scenario tasks is rewarded with engaging 2D and 3D animations to reinforce learning objectives.
We also created an editor to enable NATS’ Training and Development team to easily keep scenario text and images up to date.
- The scenarios have been a hit with learners and instructors alike.
- The editor has enabled NATS to be responsive when receiving feedback from learners and instructors.
- The editor has been used by NATS in-house team to create scenarios for other courses
- The success of this course led to NATS and Make Real partnering on the next course in the engineering programme, ATSEP Shared, for which we built a new set of scenarios.
